When the night"s curtain fall, in the park or on the square, people danced lightly to a " yangge "----a popular Chinese dance unique in the north of China.

Songhuajiang River breeds Harbin people with inspiring feelings. Therefore, Harbin is renowned to be "A City of Music". Stage play, opera and Longjiang opera are famous both at home and abroad for their particular charming. The show of the Opera "Truilus and Cressida" put on in Harbin marked the first time of Shakespeare"s play for opera performance in Asia. "Harbin Summer Concert ", beginning in 1961, is a creation by industrious and ingenious people of Harbin. Up to now, it has been successfully held 33 times. In 1996, the 23th " Harbin Summer Concert " was co-sponsored by the Culture Bureau of P. R. China and Harbin for the first time. This indicates that the local concert has been promoted to national level. For example, The 28th Harbin Summer Concert was held in Flood Control Monument Tower Square and 1001 performers gave the concert the largest scale piano performance in China. Harbin people have built a bridge to the world with beautiful music notes.

What brought Harbin people more pride was that on February 4,1996, the Asian Winter Games-the largest intercontinental Games before the end of this century, was held in Harbin. The holy fire was lighted here.

The Three Peculiars in the Northeast
1、Window papers pasted outside. The horses in the Northeast used to have clay walls, the windowpapers were pasted outside to prevent entry of the cold and wind.
2、Girls smoking tobacco pipes. The winter in the Northeast is cold and long. People can not work in the field during the long winter. Beside playing cards, chatting, there are no outside activities. There for, they often smoke tobacco pipes to kill time, no matter men or women, young or old.
3、Hanging up the baby after it is born. This is an old way for taking care of newborn babies in the Northeast. The mother would be free to do other things when the baby was hung up in a cradle in which the baby could sleep. It is side the Northeast is the birthplace of the way of using cradle in China.

1、Ginseng is one of the best Chinese herbal medicines. It is known as the king among a hundred herbs.
2、The fur of a marten is known as the king of furs. Marten fur is fine, soft and durable. It is thick fur and flossy in color. It is an ideal material for elegant fur products. There are two kinds of martens in Heilongjiang Province, sable and mink. Sable fur is more expensive and used for small quantity of products. Such furs are a symbol of affluence. Sable furs are known as soft gold. The sable has three features. The fur gets warmer in the winds, the fur thaws the snow and rain will never wet the fur. There are historical records from this province that contributions of sable fur to different dynasties of the Central Plain.
3、Deer-horn is a valuable medicine and nutrition supplement mainly derived from the red deer on Great Xing-an Mountain. The term deer-horn grow for about eighty days each year and the heavest of such horns takes place in July and August.
